The DCI is giving players in a growing number of countries and stores the opportunity to play in a weekly event and have a shot at cool FOIL prize cards in the process. FNM is designed to keep the play style casual. For example:

* FNM events have significantly less impact on players' ratings than most tournaments;
* prize cards are available to participants in other ways than just to the winners; and
* for rules enforcement, the emphasis is on teaching players the correct ways to play.

You only have to remember three things: Pack your Standard deck; remember where the tournament is happening, and what time it starts.

Friday Night Magic Rules:

* 1st and 2nd place receive one prize card each.
* Door prize: The tournament organizer will randomly award the remaining two prize cards to two players that did not place first or second.
* FNM events are 8k tournaments and have a Regular Rules Enforcement Level (REL).
* All 4 prize cards associated with each Friday Night Magic event must be awarded to the players.
* Friday Night Magic events can only be run on Fridays.

Premium Card Prizes:

Each month a different FOIL card will be given out. The cards feature the FNM logo in the text box and many have original flavor text and updated wordings.

Main Event

Standed Constructed FNM

Registration: 6:45 p.m.

Start Time: 7:00 p.m.

Entrance fee: $5.00

Format: Constructed - Standard (M11)

Format Description: Constructed decks must contain a minimum of sixty cards. If a player wishes to use a sideboard, it must contain exactly fifteen cards.

With the exception of basic land cards, a player's combined deck and sideboard may not contain more than four of any individual card, counted by its english card title equivalent. All cards named Plains, Island, Swamp, Mountain, and Forest are basic.

The following card sets are permitted in this Standard tournament:
Magic 2011 (M11), Zendikar, Worldwake, Rise of the Eldrazi and Scars of Mirrodin.

Structure: Swiss

Structure Description: Most of Pastimes tournaments utilize a system of pairing called "Swiss".

The principle of a Swiss tournament is that each player will be pitted against another player who has done as well (or as poorly) as him or herself.

The first round is either drawn at random or seeded according to rating. Players who win receive a point, those who draw receive half a point and losers receive no points. Win, lose, or draw, all players proceed to the next round where winners are pitted against winners, losers are pitted against losers, and so on. In subsequent rounds, players face opponents with the same (or almost the same) score. No player is paired up against the same opponent twice however.

Here is a summary of the modified swiss pairing system:

* Round one : All players are paired randomly.
* Round two: the winners of round one will play each other, the losers of round one will play each other
* Round three: the players with 0-2 records play each other, likewise with the 1-1s, and the 2-0s.
* Round four: the 0-3s play each other, as do the 2-1s, the 1-2s, and the 3-0s.

Sometimes, however, it is not possible to pair players with exactly the same records (due to drops or draws), so you may be "paired" up or down a record.

After an amount of rounds set at the beginning of the tournament (based on the number of players), the player with the best record wins.

Number of Swiss Rounds to be played. There is a fairly set standard for the number of Swiss Rounds in an event based on the number of participants:

Attendance Number of Swiss rounds
Attendance = 9-16 Swiss Rounds = 4
Attendance = 17 - 32 Swiss Rounds = 5
Attendance = 33 - 64 Swiss Rounds = 6
Attendance = 65 - 128 Swiss Rounds = 7
Attendance = 129 - 226 Swiss Rounds = 8
Attendance = 227 - 409 Swiss Rounds = 9
Attendance = 410 or higher Swiss Rounds = 10
