•All M10 Prerelease main event tournaments will be run using Sealed Deck format, with each player receiving 6 booster packs of M10 to build a deck.
•Prerelease tournaments are run using Swiss rounds, with a minimum of four rounds per event. (Tournaments with only 8 players may run three rounds.)
Prerelease Tournament Prizes
Wizards of the Coast provides each Prerelease tournament location with at least 72 M10 boosters to be used as main event prize support. Exactly 2 M10 boosters will be added to the main event prize pool for each tournament participant.
Additional prizes may also be awarded.
Each participant will receive 1 promo card (while supplies last).
Prerelease Public Events
In addition to the main Prerelease tournament, some locations may offer Open Dueling, Team, Booster Draft, and additional Sealed Deck public events.
Open Dueling — Open Dueling is a casual format primarily for players not participating in the main Prerelease tournament. Open Dueling players receive 1 M10 Intro Pack chosen at random, 1 Open Dueling Results Card, and 1 M10 promo card (while supplies last). Open Dueling players play against other Open Dueling participants as well as main tournament players who are between matches. (Tournament players are encouraged to help Open Dueling and new players learn how to play Magic.) After an Open Dueling participant has played five matches and completely filled in the Results Card, upon confirmation of the results by the event organizer that player will receive one complimentary booster pack.
Team Events — Playing with friends as a team is a fun and exciting way to enjoy Magic. For Two-Headed Giant events, all teams tournament should each receive the same mix of booster packs. The recommended mix for Prerelease team events is 8 Booster Packs of M10 per team.
Booster Draft — Players participating in a booster draft tournament will receive 3 boosters of M10 booster packs.
Sealed Deck — As with the main Prerelease tournament, each player in a Sealed Deck tournament will receive 6 booster packs of M10 to build a deck.
Registration: 9:00 a.m.
Start Time: 10:00 a.m.
Entrance fee: $30
Format: Limited - Sealed Deck
Notes: 6 Magic 2010 Booster packs will be used to construct your deck
Format Description: Main decks must contain a minimum of forty cards. There is no maximum deck size. All cards a player received but is not using in his or her main deck become that player's sideboard.
Players are not restricted to four of any one card in Limited tournament play.
Any drafted or opened cards not used in a player's Limited deck function as his or her sideboard. The sideboard may not be kept where it could be confused or switched with other cards.
Structure: Swiss
Structure Description: Most of Pastimes tournaments utilize a system of pairing called "Swiss".
The principle of a Swiss tournament is that each player will be pitted against another player who has done as well (or as poorly) as him or herself.
The first round is either drawn at random or seeded according to rating. Players who win receive a point, those who draw receive half a point and losers receive no points. Win, lose, or draw, all players proceed to the next round where winners are pitted against winners, losers are pitted against losers, and so on. In subsequent rounds, players face opponents with the same (or almost the same) score. No player is paired up against the same opponent twice however.
Here is a summary of the modified swiss pairing system:
* Round one : All players are paired randomly.
* Round two: the winners of round one will play each other, the losers of round one will play each other
* Round three: the players with 0-2 records play each other, likewise with the 1-1s, and the 2-0s.
* Round four: the 0-3s play each other, as do the 2-1s, the 1-2s, and the 3-0s.
Sometimes, however, it is not possible to pair players with exactly the same records (due to drops or draws), so you may be "paired" up or down a record.
After an amount of rounds set at the beginning of the tournament (based on the number of players), the player with the best record wins.
Number of Swiss Rounds to be played. There is a fairly set standard for the number of Swiss Rounds in an event based on the number of participants:
Attendance Number of Swiss rounds
Attendance = 9-16 Swiss Rounds = 4
Attendance = 17 - 32 Swiss Rounds = 5
Attendance = 33 - 64 Swiss Rounds = 6
Attendance = 65 - 128 Swiss Rounds = 7
Attendance = 129 - 226 Swiss Rounds = 8
Attendance = 227 - 409 Swiss Rounds = 9
Attendance = 410 or higher Swiss Rounds = 10
Prizes: For each and every flight you play in receive: FREE Special FNM at Pastimes (play in more than one flight - give your entry to a friend!), $5 Coupon for Pastimes online store (no min purchase - it's just FREE!), $5 off any of the Pastimes Holiday $1K events!!
